There's no rational reason for having doing a big formal funeral ceremony, other than a show for the living. I had to take care of things a couple of years ago when my BF died. She didn't want a big expensive do, just cremation, an obituary to let people know, and her ashes scattered on the sea, simple. Rather than a funeral, I think it'd be better if the nearest and dearest just got together for drinks and dinner while swapping stories about the deceased.
