One huge potential drawback to account portability that I'm concerned about is the risk of dodging moderation.
Depending on how it's implemented, it has to be in a way that it respects blocked users as well as subsequent response pile-ons.
Instance portability is great, if it works and respects consent. Otherwise it's gonna turn into harassment hell.
It's one thing I've observed while learning how federated servers do things. KBin and Lemmy have had huge growing pains with this.
