Marriage is fundamentally a property contract between a man and a woman. The government doesn't have to be involved for it to be contracted.

This is part of my argument. People often enter into de facto marriages, with all of the consequences to property (including each other and any children or other dependents), and then split up and behave as if they had just been "friends with benefits". And the government is left to clean up the mess. But the government has no money. So they print the money.

People used to actively avoid entering into any relationship that even smelled like marriage because they knew they would be required to pay up, if the relationship dissolved. Money printing allowed everyone to just walk away, delaying payment into the next generation and then the next and the next.

Move in, move out. Play house, then sue for child support. Switch up lovers. Stay "single" and collect welfare for being a single parent, even though the other parent is still around. Divorce, sue for alimony.
Didn't work out? Send the taxpayer the bill. Roll out the printing presses.
