It was never about "everyone [has] their wifi routers open", because we realised from the start that this approach would never scale, but it was certainly about a "mesh network protocol" using WiFi.
Technically it was worth pursuing. It fell apart because everyone had their own agenda, and some of those agendas weren't about making the project a success.
