It's laziness, and apropos of American culture in the 21st C. Journalism schools for the last 40 years have been teaching students how to make money, not how to be journalists. Anyone who comes out of the big journalism schools and becomes an actual journalist is rare. Motivated entirely by personal integrity and not down to anything they learned in school, they are becoming a rare commodity indeed. (Same can be said for the IVY law programs).
