Here's what I recall:
Once the death toll got really high the South most certainly did force enslaved people to fight. So there were definitely enslaved people on the battlefield. And they did not provide them uniforms.
Many enslaved people escaped to the North and volunteered to fight. Black men fighting for the North were killed by Confederates rather then held as POWs.
