Finally got a new PC with an SSD and things improved literally 100x, because SSD don't give a shit about seek times.
So why is this? Lazy game devs? Well... sort of. For decades we'd pack files into "WAD" files to reduce seek times. A gigantic hassle for sure, but worth it.
Until SSDs came along, and now it's not. Because the speed is the same either way.
So is saving your entire dev team hours a day repacking WAD files "lazy"? Arguably yes - but it's the good kind.
