I've had some long conversations with Michael Harris. His writings often adopt a "Parisian intellectual" tone that I don't sympathize with - for example, in the review you pointed me too, it quotes him as saying

"The ‘I’ of this chapter’s title is not the hateful ‘I’ of Blaise Pascal’s Pensees but rather the hypothetical ‘I’ of a Weberian ideal type."

But in conversations with me he acts more like an American - perhaps because that's how I act. Actually he acts like a New Yorker (which he is, even now, even though he seems to spend most of his time in Paris).
