TIL that since Argentina couldn’t place debt in the US financial market after the 2001 default, Venezuela bought a bunch of that then proceeded to repackage it with debt of their own in a CDO-like instrument, which allowed them to sell it… in the US financial market.
But not directly, they allegedly used middlemen which would purchase the instruments from the government to sell them in the US and dump the dollars in the black market for a shared profit with government officials
Amazing. Disgusting, but amazing.
