The harakeke-NZ flaxes are starting to flower across Ōtautahi-Christchurch. NZ. It's one of those odd years where most of the kowhai are flowering a few months late, so there's kowhai and harakeke flowering at the same time.
The city keeps its river banks tidy with regular weed-whacking, makeing it difficult for wild harakeke to establish. Around Wigram Retention basin, they're instead establishing through the middle of the Carex secta sedges, where they don't get mown.
