I keep writing substantial population decline into my stories (set near-future) not as some kind of apocalypse, as if we need some *unknown* Children of Man thing to crash fertility rates, but because all the things *we already know* add up to that future as just given. That's not part of the premise, it's part of the baseline reality going forward.
