As you said, the Tea Party kept buying you dinner. There was a well-funded, nationwide effort to coöpt Occupy. And when you feel like you need numbers on your side it can be hard to say no to people just because they don't share exactly the same goals and methods as you.

But it wasn't just coöption; plenty of Bernie supporters ended up voting for Trump, because they "just wanted change". Probably some significant lessons from Weimar Germany there. The Germans "just wanted change" too.
