It’s not true actually.
Guy that speaking my mother tongue called “Tomas Mikolov” was actually working for the Google back in the days and in reality, he says that when he came to Google Translate team, he was so surprised that they are not using neural networks yet. Neither in Translation team or in search team, it was all coded manually.
I think it was 2013-2014 if I remember that podcast correctly.
He said it was because the boss/CEO in the office was too skeptical about
neural networks/machine training.
They added it way later after launch.
