I've just been looking into adding a safety certificate to all my sites (three active and about five dormant all with working email accounts) and once again realising it's way beyond my means.
The cheapest my hosting company offers is £50 a year for EACH domain, or a package £150 a year to cover them all - every year!!!
And if I need them to install the certificates for me, which I do, that's going to cost me another £25 a year for each domain....
On top of the hosting/domain renewal costs!
