Fedi is mostly run by individuals with passion. There's a few other Mastodon instances run by corporations like flipboard.social but they're not mastodon.social, they don't allow anyone in.
The world is run on money, if you don't wanna pay for luxuries, then you have to take some risks. One of those risks might be signing up to an instance that you can't be certain of it's future.
There's always Threads and BlueSky, but if you're trying to engage with Fedi, it'd be a bit difficult cause a lot of instances block them here.😬
