Protecting an idea with the intention to leverage it in some material way is important.
My concern is the hoarding tendency in patent submissions to weaponize speculative designs (thought experiments) to hinder any competition just because you got an inkling of an idea. You are not going to develop but make damn sure that no one else will be able to either.
