Saw two great films last night!
Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Story (2023): I have mad respect for Daniel Radcliffe - he could have done the easy thing and become a blockbuster film star, become a Marvel Superhero or something. Yet he choses odd characters that don’t make him look sexy or indie productions (produced by Roku Films, I didn’t even know that was a thing?). He nails it. The Al Yankovic biopic is filmed and directed like a straight-to-TV biopic but, due to the subject, it’s a parody, of course. It’s hilarious. And everyone is incredible in it.
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2023): I didn’t really know what to expect. It’s directed by George Miller (yes from Fury Road, which I absolutely adore!) and it shows. It’s absolutely stunning, it’s a story about a scholar of storytelling being told stories. And it’s a fantasy, with a djinn in a bottle, that manages to escape the trope of “be careful with what you wish for”. Just insanely beautiful. I need more films like this.
Great choices for Sunday evening.
