After just reading about it, it seems that it's because of the events in the US that started it all. A protest for workers rights on 1 may 1886 got violently repressed. In 1888, the federation of workers unions commemorated that event by striking, on 1 may. So the modern "day off" is kinda like an officially sanctioned strike.
