Apparently they're doing a fair bit at least in the UK, but I'm specifically talking about Fresh Expressions which is something they're doing alongside the Methodists. Fresh Expressions is basically looking at different ways churches can do church. There's a lot that falls under the label but here's a few:
- Messy church: Used by congregations that have a lot of young kids. Essentially there's a theme for the service and you include activities that explore those themes as part of the service.
- Café church: More of an outreach thing than what we might think of when we hear "church". Basically, if you've got a building in the middle of town (be it the church or some other space) you use it as a meeting place/café for people to meet in and talk about Jesus.
- House churches: pretty straightforward, house churches are included as a 'fresh expression' of church.
SuperLutheran (npub1tm5…zt6m) might not like it but his Catacomb Synod would classify as a 'fresh expression'.
- Return to the old ways: Some churches are even having luck returning to older forms of worship. This includes stuff like high liturgy and even a new monastic movement (though I don't know much about that).
Honestly it strikes me as a way to give churches permission to try something new that serves a need in their community. I'm certain there are some who are doing "drag church" under the Fresh Expressions label but that's not an indictment of Fresh Expressions.
