I constantly find myself saying "I use mastodon/fediverse" because while fediverse is the correct term, mastodon is the word they might recognize a little.
So what if they do listen and try to join? What happens? I have seen people start their own servers and sit there alone and confused. I've seen people get on mastodon.social but not follow enough people, decide "it's dead" and leave.
I was lucky enough to migrate with a big group from twitter. There were still people I knew.
