Yes, and this is based on Joseph Smith being philosophically uneducated. He didn't understand what God was, but he did have a myth of eternal progression without sacrificing the things that make life great, like companionship, inheritance, etc.
I would say, like in Buddhism, that there is probably a non-personal God underneath the system that makes it work, that isn't the god at the top of the formal hierarchy.
I would, of course, be called a heretic for saying this in either religion, but it's a logical necessity. If you called it anything other than God they'd probably be fine with it.
