Bad idea. Even if I broke even with donations or even if I made money it would make significantly less than my actual job (which is underpaid but not as underpaid as a fedi admin) and would be as much of a headache if not more.
I host things because I find them fun or useful, not having an Ash Furrow type lording over me has value in and of itself. Opening yourself up to donations brings the risk of needing to catter to donors who might not know what is best, or having external forces influence your decisions (I can't be bought because I don't need your money). Also outside of monero if you are using stripe your revenue might get cut because Joe Biden says Russians or $next_conflict_zone aren't worth doing business with.
I have other plans on how to monitize, and none of it involves fediverse, but a lot of studying of things people don't want to learn, and then capital investment that I can foot myself. My current plans this year are to either downsize the misskey VM or dual purpose it for game servers. I'm leaning more toward game servers because that's what I did in college and I find fun things fun.
