"content": "The word \"Algorithm\" seems to be evolving a second meaning. In the context of defining the difference between social media sorting systems, \"the algorithm\" is an opaque system built by advertising companies with nefarious intent designed to manipulate a person in to engagement, and to political and purchase decisions. \n\nAs usual with language, you'd pick a better word if you could design the language instead of having to let it evolve in a messy contradictory way.\n\nEven without that second meaning though, the phrase \"No algorithm imposing posts on us\" is true for Mastodon at least. The things in your feed are chosen, not imposed. Even those boosted are boosted by your followers not by advertisers or political manipulators or the owners of the site. The key word is \"imposing\".",
