At risk of sounding terribly naive, I've come to the realization that many of the emotions and experiences I held to be a human universal are actually beyond the capacity of most people. The transactional attitudes towards relationships are not, as I once thought, a cynical reaction to prior wrongdoings but rather just the modus operandi of the average person. Difficult to have empathy considering.
