in setting up an email server on OpenBSD, and trying to make it fully functional only using smtpd and spamd, no dovecot, imap, or pop3, i realized how much fun email must have been before the onslaught of the spam predators. you can still define an explicit list of email addresses which can use your little server as a relay. But these days, unless you close off all relays and block emails from residential addresses, the Big Tech email providers wont accept your emails.
lesson, the Hegelian dialectic of 'problem, reaction, solution' can be used to centralize open protocols quite easily with people who dont know, and dont pay attention.
