Well at some point you're going to melt the heat exchanger, so I think that might be too hot.

I don't see why it wouldn't get there, especially if you start to force a little bit of air to it, but you have to reign it in before it starts eating itself.

An interesting application for this would be wood gasification. You always want to cool down the wood gas after it's been generated, but energy you put in by pre-heating the intake air is energy that you don't need to make by burning wood inside the gasifier.
