For a straight up mic, Shure SM58 is pretty popular as are the Blue Snowball and Blue Yeti.
When I was doing audio recording, I used a Rode NT1A XLR coupled with a Zoom H4 recorder, but that was a long time ago.
Now, I just use a cheap off-brand lapel mic that plugs into my phone and use the voice recorder app for my (somewhat) daily podcast, that I record while I'm walking around the neighborhood.
