Despite earning a law degree from Chicago's Kent College of Law in 1898, Robert Sengstacke Abbott's aspirations of becoming a lawyer were thwarted by racial discrimination. His attempts to establish private law firms in Gary; Topeka; and Chicago, proved unsuccessful, compounded by failure to pass the bar exam in IL. Before law & inspired by his stepfather, Abbott acquired skills in printing, working as an apprentice at a printing company.
