Rock'n'roll had its day, and light popular music before it, with the emphasis on the past tense.
As small children, my late-teenage niblings were baffled by music unaccompanied by video, and by photos that didn't move. What were LPs even for?

I suspect music was supplanted in large part by video games.
AFAICT it's Tik Tok right now, but next month it could be something you (and I) have never even heard of.

As one corollary, this could help explain the divided opinions about whether the music is the core of the Goth subculture. I now see how anybody younger than Gen X might be confused by the idea that music could be a cultural linchpin.
