I agree people are excusing themselves from protecting others as well as themselves when trying to present that choice as purely personal.
It rubs me the wrong way when I hear it.
At the surface because we don't need anybody's consent or approval to wear a mask, and that's implied when people say they don't mind. I will wear them even if they do mind and are vocal about it - and it does happen more than I expected.
But dig a bit deeper and there's a false equivalence implied between us having to accept that others will not take measures to protect themselves and others if it's inconvenient, and them having to accept that we will do it even if it causes cognitive dissonance and social awkwardness.
These things are very much *not* equivalent.
