The PC Users Group I used to attend meetings at encouraged people to bring in old computer equipment and books that they weren't using, and had a pile labeled "if you can use it, take it free." I both donated and grabbed lots of great stuff like this in the 90's. It was just embedded into early PC culture, you can see it in stuff like Linux still.
