I love this! I have a copy of The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagles. Haven’t had time to read it all the way through. Is that a source you’re familiar with? Instinctively I lean toward a gnostic interpretation of Christianity. I believe God is within each of us and that the church has used a gospel of separation to keep people from acknowledging a direct inborn relationship to God. Instead they want to mediate that relationship. I believe that the real teaching of Jesus likely showed people a path to a unmediated connection to God that is available to us all. I haven’t done the level of research you appear to have done but I think I intuitively come to a similar conclusion.
