The problem with a command economy is that it is planned by politicians who usually have no idea what goes into production, and it incentivizes falsifying production to satisfy quotas on paper. (See: CCCP)
But a fully capitalist economy is no better in practice, as the incentives are to extract as much short term profit as possible, then scrap the business to get the last drops out.
What is required, I believe, is a hybrid system, in which survival goods and services are produced and distributed by the State, as part of ensuring the integrity of the human infrastructure, but luxury goods and services are produced and sold by private enterprise, under a regulated model of worker-owned democratic cooperatives.
The reasoning here is that the failure of capitalism to address poverty must be addressed, but if it is really your life ambition to build fancy pleasure boats or farm caviar, then you should be allowed to do it, so long as you’re not hurting anyone.
