As far as I understand, it's both open on the protocol level, and a walled garden. Wavlake outputs podcast2, but it doesn't read any. Thus wavlake users (listeners) only ever see Wavlake music in the wavelake clients, while users of some other clients can see any podcast2 feed.

Happened to me a couple of times. So i asked the recipients. Turns out they had gotten the zap, but we didn't find an explanation. Maybe something about the relays storing them? As far as I understand what we see on nostr is not derived from the lightning network... 🤷

Couldn't agree more. I don't think I am ready to drop the network entirely yet, but knowing nostr I have lost all interest in building community over activitypub. Topically, AP offers more diversity and I have many human connections that I value over there. But my efforts are focused on migrating and learning as much as I can about nostr. I am happy to scout for my fellows less aware of any given technical implications and I'm no stranger to the lonesome web. It never stays lonesome for very long anyways.
Tbh I don't know how admins of large instances sleep at night. Besides whatever drama any given user can bring upon the server, an admin is responsible for people's entire graph. Well, more like the owner tbh. I run a small instance of about 30 poeple and it's ok, given I know everyone personally. We're a small collective helping each other being independent. But in many ways, activitypub is incompatible with that idea. When they leverage our infra for their outreach, they effectively become dependent on our infra to maintain the results of their efforts.
But not everything should be thrown away from it. Especially not the social dynamics. There's a lot to learn from fediverse in that it is the oldest decentralized (federated) network and it has gained a lot of experience in both best and worse case scenario that can arise from that setup. Take for example follow packs that are the current hot deal in here. It's a lovely idea, and it was tried a long time a go over there. What came out is that, without a consent mechanism, they quickly get leveraged maliciously: people being grouped in packs with highly unflattering titles.
Fedi was the right thing to use at a given point of time in the past. It won't scale any other way than a few multimillion user instances and a handful of brave selfhosters building their graph from scratch every couple of years. I don't think it is ready for what's coming in terms of the corporate adoption going on and the type of scamming and spamming that it brings. There simply is no property verifiable way to create a web of trust on the protocol.

I mean, sure, to claim that downloading any given Nostr app will automagically set you up for the analogue version of an internet is misleading at best. I'm sure some apps and the default relay they pack have incentives to show more things than other. I don't know if it is fact, but the Primal experience made me feel like a packed chicken. I guess ordering notes by time of post is an algorithm... And there are plenty of creative relays sorting and filtering in interesting ways. My issue isn't with algos per se, rather specifically opak and manipulative algos.
After this weekend, I'm this 🤏 close to a script that generates a #podcast2 feed for all my tracks. Past and future. In terms of content, you only need to properly tag your audio files with an ID3 tagger.

Apparently #amethyst allows me to write them and I'm definitely doing that from now on. Just wish it would show them too.
One thing I really enjoy with the fediverse culture that I wish was more frequent on #nostr, is image alt text.
People go to great length writing them and they're mostly well crafted and often add to the image itself. And it makes the network actually useable for visually impaired people. Every now and then someone from that community will get mindblown and verbose for finally getting to participate in memes. I think it's beautiful.

I spun up a docker version of nostrcheck and still wrapping my head around the the instructions. I registered a new user, but i'm not able to get the "read this carefully" instructions go away. i don't seem to find the dashboard and I can't log out the public user either. Any pointers to further documentation about this process would be render me very thankful!
I don't think people chose fediverse because of privacy. It's never going to scale in any other way than a few multi-milion servers administrated by powertripping identity owners and a handful of brave single server hosters who have to start over building their graph every other year.
Frankly the protocol is straight up bullcrap, and i say that as small server admin, it's the people on it that makes it interesting.

One thing i've been throwing at my mind to distract it, is laying out this system in my to produce PC2 feeds for my shit and it helped me formulate good search queries the lead me to this.

I can now see how i'll do it. This is the perfect means for an ignorant savant like me. I mean, i can't really program for shit, but writing filters for hugo is comfy. So the idea is to fetch all the goodness from the public endpoints of my peertube chan and have it build the feeds with the value blocks. The feeds are static, but a lil' cronjob on that and kaboom!
There's nothing revolutionary to it, just fun. Haven't pushed anything yet, but i'm thinking that i'll try to make it as reusable as possible to help onbaord other fellow peertubers.

My wife and i have a band called Lies & Sets
Our first ever track is called "Internet Vänn", which means "Internet Friend".
The lyrics are in swedish and talk about friendship on the internet and how quickly people can turn on eachother through judgmental readings. "Wrong" semantics that will lead someone to be outcast from communities in superficial herd verdicts of who someone may be, based on the words they use. It examines how that could go in a different setting, when everyone share space and time, and asks us to think again before labeling someone something based on their internet persona.

It appears it is also possible to add a relay list to the static json file that serves for NIP-05, which is useful when running your own or your community's relays. Though the NIP-65 (mailbox) method seems to be preferred.

Those are servers, but in terms of clients there are even more! And since the API bonanza is up to each server-software developer, some apps only work against specific servers... Fediverse is a mess in all possible ways. But in my smol opinion, it's by far the most topically diverse and fun FOSS network at the time of writing this. Which i suppose is more of a network effect thing than purely technical.

for the chat, i doubt it will be possible to bridge them easily. I get the feeling that if you find the HLs stream of your server, you will be automatically routing it to zap.stream via your own...
I'm sure there is a way to do all this without zap.stream, but so far i haven't found any ready made tools. I fear it might involve running a node and crafting a post with some cli magick. But we'll get to the bottom of this!
it looks like you can do it easily with zap.stream in the dashboard, once you have created a stream, there is an option at the bottom "i have my own streaming server". This supposedly removes the fees for streaming also...

My point is, if the people aren't equiped to read legal jargon, then the loudest voices are governing opinions. Direct democracy is great, and a swiss can vote nearly every sunday on communal issues, cantonal or federal. Beautiful. But it is not the silver bullet that it seems without education.
i remeber turning 18 in Geneva, Switzerland and getting to vote for the first time. There was an initiative to regulate whether villa owners could dump their sewers in the closest river or not. As usual the city got covered in posters to help people make up their mind on what to vote. Some posters were saying "save the water, vote NO" and the other posters were saying "Do not sacrifice the water, vote YES"
Not gonna lie, getting a password stolen is absolutely trivial. It happens all the time and sometimes to the best. Stealing a password is just a matter of presenting a trustworthy password prompt in a trustworthy context.
Nostr is all about that trust. You need to trust the client. If you don't, your private key (password) is gone.
I'm not saying it's bad. What i am saying is that secrets have a tendency to find a way out, and even more so digital secrets. Especially where there is no education about the implication of said secrets or the maintenance thereof.
Could it be that anti-censorship is more than an app? Could it be a set of basic knowledge items? How do we make our peers digitally savy?
