Based on what my relatives have been telling me back in Egypt, this is a spot on assessment of what's been going on.
Another example:
A big reason for the insane traffic in Cairo and Alexandria is that their transit systems are nowhere near extensive enough for the population size.
With all the money being spent building new cities from scratch, some of that must be spent to vastly expand metro systems in both.
To put it into context: Cairo metropolitan area and NYC metropolitan area have about the same population size of about 22 million.
NYC metro area has:
- Largest subway system in the world with 472 stations and 36 lines.
- LIRR commuter rail to the Long Island suburbs with 11 lines and 126 stations
- Metro North commuter rail with 5 lines and 124 stations
- NJ Transit commuter rail with 12 lines and 165 stations
Cairo metropolitan area has:
- Cairo Metro with 3 lines and 84 stations

Quiet looks super interesting, it's like Discord/Slack but actually decentralized/P2P. Messages and content are synced between devices using IPFS/OrbitDB and connects made through Tor.

Was thinking about this the other day, and it inspired me to start working on what I call VibeTag.
The idea behind it is to be able to tag any content on the internet with a “vibe”/“sentiment”, whether it’s a nostr post, something on Mastodon, Twitter, even entire websites.
This will initially focus on whether the sentiment of the content is positive (informative, funny, etc) or negative (misleading, rage-bait, vulgar in general) etc.
As more and more content is tagged in either direction, it learns what words/phrases are associated with positive content vs negative. The tags and info about associated content would be synced across content through the beauty of Nostr relays.
This essentially allows there to be a straightforward algorithm that you can take with you across the internet that automatically generates/updates a list of words associated with shitty content and hides it from view.
This is something I’ll be integrating into @npub16he…z8zz but also will be a library anyone can integrate into their project! #note19al…8rr6

This is why I see apps like Signal as stopgaps until iPhones implement RCS. It can be E2E encrypted and is basically an upgrade to SMS on everyones phones, so no one has to install another app, it's just their regular texts but upgraded with typing indicators, read receipts, group chats that actually work, etc.

Nuking nostr.build would be way more noticeable, it seems like the vast majority of images posted on nostr are hosted there.
I really wish IPFS or WebTorrent were more performant, would be a great way to decentralize image hosting so that users who have loaded the image can seed it to others who wish to load it.
In the meantime, a stepping stone towards fully decentralized images on nostr could be if more clients + relays implemented NIP-95 to allow images to be directly sent to relays and distributed that way.

What this shows is just how big of an impact there is from @npub18m7…q955 not implementing NIP-65.
It’s by far the most popular nostr client on iOS, and until it implements NIP-65, nostr will continue to operate under this “must connect to a few huge centralized relays to get a proper experience” situation.
That kind of nostr is *marginally* better than Mastodon when it comes to being decentralized. #note10jk…et5n
