I was once a member of the Labour Party – but not any more. I left in 2021, the day that David Lammy dismissed women’s rights campaigners like me as ‘dinosaurs... hoarding their rights’. For good measure, he claimed that men can grow a cervix.
I could see then that, on the issue of trans rights, my party had lost the plot. It had veered so wildly from what I felt was right – and frankly what the vast majority of the public feels is right – that I could no longer support it.
The Supreme Court ruling should have been a wake-up call for Labour but the party has shown itself to be hopelessly out of touch once again.
The silence from the PM on such a socially transformative ruling is tin-eared enough. But now the likes of Home Office Minister Dame Angela Eagle are plotting to thwart the judgment in a cowardly WhatsApp group of Labour MPs.

The tragedy for German democracy is that as the SPD withers, the space for extremism grows.
For British observers, Germany’s left-wing implosion offers a cautionary tale. Political parties exist to represent voters, not to lecture them. When parties forget this basic truth, voters find alternatives – however unsavory. If the SPD cannot learn this lesson from their Danish counterparts, they may soon find themselves studying it in the political wilderness. Nope. No sheds. No stores. No mountains of food. No plan.
All politicians say that food security matters, but no one admits that basically we don’t have it. Britain probably has less than a week of food supplies. The only food in the UK is what’s on the shelves of our supermarkets now, and what’s in their lorries on the way to the shops. Oh, and whatever you have in the fridge, plus a few crops growing on UK farms or stored in barns, and whatever is edible and roaming around in fields. And perhaps you could hunt or forage if you have a gun or a trap or two.

The involvement of the courts might sound reassuring, but we know from the scandal of the single justice procedure – under which thousands of people have been prosecuted for TV licence evasion without their knowledge – how easily a judicial decision becomes in practice a rubber-stamping procedure.
The experience of Canada and the Netherlands, which have (among others) already legalised assisted suicide, indicates how the practice would develop in Britain if this bill passes. In Canada, assisted suicide was introduced on the understanding that it should only be available to terminally ill people whose death was ‘reasonably foreseeable’. Then the Superior Court of Quebec ruled that this discriminated against people who are not terminally ill and from 2027 assisted suicide will be available across Canada for those suffering from psychiatric illness. The fact that the judgment of these people is by definition impaired has done nothing to prevent the state offering to help them die.
Wherever it has been introduced, a law legalising assisted dying for the terminally ill has, in short order, evolved into routine euthanasia.

It is where the adhesive is, which in turn makes the plaster slower to dry. He was mystified by the patch with the reverse pattern. And accused me of having spent the evening watching paint dry.
