You know what I really like about the #BSD community ? Earlier I posted about maybe trying #OpenBSD for my desktop instead of my current #FreeBSD and nobody said "No" use the other. If I'd said that about a #Linux distro I'd have had folk from all corners shouting use this distro or that. The BSD community chime in when you ask for help or when they see a way that could be better for you. I'm probably going to sent to Coventry for saying this but ah well bite me. Free speech and all. 🤣

I probably will install #FreeBSD but I have looked at maybe trying #OpenBSD but I'm kind of put off by the small selection of #Wayland stuff. I'm not sure wether I would, should or could go back to an X based WM ??? Food for thought thought and feel free OpenBSD family to tell me why I should or not.

Apps can have shortcuts under Android like Firefox has new tab , private browsing. My camera has take a selfie and scan barcode. These are detected by Niagara launcher but if I go in to the Kiss settings and turn on showing shortcuts in the app menu none are displayed. I even tryed rebooting. Looking through their hits issues others have had similar experiences. Do you have shortcuts displayed in your app menu ?? What Android version are you using ?

I've paid and been using Niagara Launcher on my Fairphone 4 running CalyxOs but I have been looking at other FOSS launchers. I'm testing Kiss Launcher but I cannot get it to scan or display application shortcuts like scan barcode which I get from my camera app under Niagara. I have enabled the settings but it seems others have issues on certain Android versions and I'm on 15. Are there any other launchers like Kiss that allow custom icons , tags, favorite's and widgets ?

Anyone else running a #Wayland WM under #Wlroots and it freezes your computer to the point that nothing works not even switching TTY ? I thought it was #RiverWM related but it happens with #SwayWM too. If I don't start a Wayland session my computer is fine all day. But under Wayland I'm starting to get these random freezes like twice a day and the only cure is to hold the power button. I mean I'm.tempted to revert back to X11 for stability so any info or ideas would be gratefully received. Oh and I'm running #FreeBSD too.

Ok #FreeBSD folk I'm having a wee issue converting a sed line in one of my scripts from Linux to FreeBSD. The command in question is sed -z 's/\n/\\n/g' but in FreeBSD there is no -z option.
What would be a work around or similar ?

Hmmm went to give #Niri a whirl to see what it's like and I get it to start from the terminal but it has one mouse cursor stuck in the top left of my laptops screen and the other I can move between both screens, but no keyboard shortcuts are working. I cannot even exit using the defaults, I have to go into another tty and kill niri. I am using the latest #FreeBSD any ideas ?

Some window managers do have that facility under Wayland. I'm running #RiverWM and it has also I know #SwayWM has too. There are most likely unclutter type progs too but I've not searched ?

I remember our ADSL days and BT. We too suffered a crackling noise on the line and they blamed everything. I ended up replacing expensive microfilters, my modem and removing the extensions over a course of months and they threatened us with big bills. Finally another engineer was sent and he blamed our power so I killed the ac at the breaker whilst he was plugged into our line with a USB modem of his into his laptop. He stated that it was our power causing the issues and we would be charged. To which I questioned how is it our power if it is off and your laptop is running off its own battery ? He scowled and said he'd check the exchange. Magically 15 minutes later the crackling was gone and our broadband was working again. The moral of the story don't ever trust BT and pay attention to what they claim they are doing.

Well my new Intel N100 16Gb ram, 250Gb NVME is now online running #OPNsense . I didn't need to do any of the changes that Ben Tasker mentioned it just gave a full on 1GB PPPoE connection. Fingers crossed I have most things set up correctly ? I did notice a bug after updating though. Before I updated the system health graphs showed the correct date and times now it is showing me the 14th and 10PM UK time yet the systems is reporting the correct date and time plus time zone as I'm using NTP. Oh well no doubt it'll get fixed shortly.

Just received a panicked satellite telephone call from a fishing vessel currently fishing in the middle of the North sea saying that he needs help as all of the vsat, PC's and all screens on the vessel have gone off. It's not a vessel I know well so spent a while getting them to check breakers on the bridge and the engine room but nothing. I got them to plug a mobile charger in the double socket by the captains seat and it was working. So I wondered if there was a UPS somewhere. After getting the crew to hunt through the consoles and finding nothing, I asked if there was a hatch in the wheelhouse floor. Bingo as in the void space was a UPS beeping. Got them to try a few things but it was dead. Luckily there was only one output cable so I hot them to connect the input to the output. Then I heard a loud cheer. Everything had come back to life. Job done. 😎

I'm following about 7 hashtags using the new #snac hashtags follow setup. My relay has registered and I see content in the relay but on this user justine I haven't yet noticed any posts with the hashtags that I'm following appear in my feed only ones that mutuals have boosted or commented on.
I'll give it a day and see if this changes over time. 🤔

Right I've add the user relay to my #snac server and followed https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com and it seems to be working I think according to the instructions here:

I understand where you're coming from and I'm really worried about loss of federation from everyone who blocks UK IP addresses. I really have had enough of our government seemingly trying to force everyone off of self hosting to the likes of X or Meta where they can keep an eye on everyone like a nanny state. Not everyone is publishing porn or doing illegal stuff. The way our government is going is disgusting and they have gone too far now ! But what can us poor soles stuck here do ??

Most of us have seen movies like The Kingsmen and the James Bond series of movies but scenarios like these are actually starting to happen in real life. Just look at how Melon Husk is trying to influence and control how governments think. I mean he controls the worlds largest network TarSlink which countries around the world already rely on. Don't you agree that this is really quite frightening for one man to have so much power globally ?

Exploring /bin/sh on #FreeBSD and I discover that arrays are not a thing. So doing something like this ic=(0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9) as it is in my bash workspace script doesn't work in /bin/sh. But I can get around it by doing this set "0" "1" "2" "3" "4" "5" "6" "7" "8" "9" then I can just call up a value like echo $4 which would return 3.
Exciting stuff learning how to work around features or less features. Time to read up some more. 😆

So to fix my amdgpu issue ( blank screen instead of tty ) after updating #FreeBSD on my #ThinkPad P14s to 14.2-RELEASE I did the following:
Changed from quarterly to latest
Grabbed the FreeBSD source for 14.2-RELEASE
doas git clone -o freebsd -b releng/14.2 https://git.FreeBSD.org/src.git /usr/src
Then installed the ports git repo
doas git clone https://git.FreeBSD.org/ports.git /usr/ports
As I'm running an AMD Renoir GPU I need the following to be built against the new kernel.
So change into the source directory.
cd /usr/ports/graphics/drm-61-kmod/
Then install the port and cleanup after.
doas make install clean
Then simply do a reboot and as long as you still have the amdgpu module loading in your /etc/rc.conf then all should be good.
Others might tell you differently and they possibly are right as I'm still kind of a newbie to FreeBSD. Feel free to correct me and i'll amend as applicable.

Soaking in the bath after a full on week and there's still tomorrow to go. Researching to see if I can make ntpd less verbose when the network isn't around on my #FreeBSD laptop. I know there's networkmgr but I'm not feeling that just now as a #Wayland user and sometimes tty user. At the moment I'm starting interface re1 with dhcp but obviously the land cable isn't always connected or WiFI and so 1ntpd verbosely prints that it cannot connect over the tty login. I know Vermaden uses his own script but I think I'll make something that brings up re1 on dhcp eben if there is no connection then leave it to me to pick a WiFi set up using a mixture of fuzzel and some scripting. Also I notice that running ifconfig_re1 before running the dhclient in the background doesn't seem to make a difference time wise. So does it need to come before the ifconfig line ? #RunBSD

I run it on my own server at home hosting my got repo, website and various other services in jails. I also run it on my ThinkPad AMD P14s which I browse, print, scan and code. I'm also going to give my midi keyboard and equipment a shot at some point maybe. As for experience it's been a fantastic learning experience as I do love a challenge. The documentation is first class as are the community should you need to ask a question. It runs really well too and trust me I know as have been a Linux user for 20+ years.

Now I'm running #FreeBSD as my daily I was looking at a particular pkg version and noticed it was 2 releases behind. I'm not going to name the package or pkg maintainer but I decided to send an email stating I was new to FreeBSD so forgive my lack of how things work here but is there a reason your pkg is behind ?
I really didn't expect a reply TBH but got one explaining not only had their PC died recently which is now resolved but they had been busy with other pkgs. They were really nice about it and even said that the update is in the pipeline for the pkg I enquired about.
I have to say the #BSD community so far have been amazing and I have absolutely no regrets moving from #Linux . 👌

Right that's me got password-store and my email client #aerc working again on my #FreeBSD daily driver. Wan't too much hassle although I did note a message after the aerc pkg installed a dependency getop. It basically said that getopt is depreciated and will be removed on or after 31-10-2024. Consider using getopt from the pkg util-linux. I'll investigate that later I think.

I'm needing some #FreeBSD 14.1 sed assistance as my blarg blog script is now failing under FreeBSD.
When this line runs:
echo "$filename" | sed -r 's|\w+/(.*).md|build/\1.html|'
I get this error:
sed: 1: "s|\w+(.*).md|build/\1.h ...": RE error: trailing backslash (\)
I tried removing the \ before the w and the error goes away but the sed line doesn't do anything then ?
It is supposed to change any .md file paths into build/*.html
For example if it gets posts/my-first-freebsd-server.md it should output build/my-first-freebsd-server.html
This worked on #ChimeraLinux and #VoidLinux

So on #FreeBSD #RiverWM doesn't build so far from source at the moment like it did under #Linux . I may find the missing package that I need or get help. Or maybe I'll stick with the pre-compiled pkg ?

So chuffed not that I have my usual #RiverWM setup with my bar made using #Eww and river-bedload plus various scripts. Even better that I'm now running it all on #FreeBSD !
I did cheat and use a pkg for river and eww when I usually just build river from source as I just did with river-bedload. I may give building river from their git repo a try next ?

Just browsing #FreeBSD videos and came across one where they compared a FreeBSD based desktop with a Debian based LMDE. They then proceeded to compare memory usage using neofetch and said Linux uses way less memory than the FreeBSD desktop. OMG Noooo ! First the FreeBSD setup was using #ZFS which will obviously use more memory and secondary Neofetch CANNOT be used to compare memory usage between the two.
Sorry I'll go back to chilling in the bath. Rant over. 🙄

I have to say that considering I've been running my #Snac instance for a week or two, It is very light weight. The #FreeBSD #Bastille jail in total is only 629M. I'm actually really impressed and yes some will say that I don't have all of the features of #Mastodon that is true. But I have all the features that I require and it is easily administered, Upgraded and extremely low on resources. 😍

If I make a snapshot using `doas zfs snapshot zroot/home@test1-snapshot'
Can I use the following to zfs send it to my server but in a different location like below and would the target on zdata which would be home-backup have to exist first ??

So I've successfully migrated from #Mastodon to my #Snac instance without issue. That's one less thing to procrastinate about, which just leaves possibly migrating to #FreeBSD on my #ThinkPad P14s #AMD .
What to do ? Hoping folks will chime in here with some pro's or con's of migrating to the other side. As I'm nearly convinced that I'm not going to miss much. Yes I'll have limited WiFi speeds for now until the fantastic work on the ax200 drivers and others ramps up. Also I'd have to replace my Focusrite Scarlet 6i6 as FreeBSD doesn't support it. But that's not a show stopper as I'll just purchase a 2x2 with midi compatible audio interface.

So I've been running my own #Snac instance for the past week and I have to say that I'm actually loving it. It hardly takes up any resources and the inbuilt web interface is easily configurable with nothing more than #CSS .
There are some things that folk used to running #Mastodon might not like. For example it does not show any follower or following numbers to any instances. So people using Mastodon will see 0 followers and 0 following even though those Snac uses may have 100's of followers .
You do get a people tab on the snac interface that is just a list divided into people following you and people you follow but no numbers. This is an intentional design feature by the author @npub1p77…0jxq who stated.
I haven't implemented a simple count of following / followers on purpose; I consider all metrics in network media inherently toxic, because it's a way of comparing the relative success of people. This is also why, as seen from other Fediverse implementations, snac accounts always report 0 / 0 connections.
Also not all features work with android / iOS apps but most of the essentials do. I occasionally use #Tusky when I'm not just using the web interface for Snac which I just find easier. I think I will be staying with this fantastic lightweight piece of software and look forward to see what new features get added in the future. A wish would be to have a way of importing followers from Mastodon to Snac, which I think the dev is working on at the moment. Oh and I nearly forgot to say that you can import the CSV file of people that you are following through the command line and it's fairly simple to do too. I'd 100% recommended giving Snac a try if you're looking for a no nonsene lightweight #Fediverse instance.

OK here is my last test to do on my new #Snac instance. It is uploading a photo as @npub14ca…0nj8 said he'd nearly DDoS his network connection in doing so. I've been a little worried about trying this but fingers crossed my 1G FTTP connection will be fit for this as all the other instances grab the image from my next toot ?

Right I've set how long my #snac instance keeps local posts to 180 days until I see how much space this instance might eat up. If it's not too bad I may increase it or put it back to it's default of 0 which means keep all local posts. Only time will tell. ;)
