The most likely outcome will be alternating administrations, whether legit or not, that abuse the executive to the maximum. A big part of the problem is cost of living, which in the US reduces mostly to the giant pile of mandatory luxuries enforced upon people. Either you live at least at the legislated minimum luxury level, or you live on the street, with nothing in between. This is why America has tent cities full of drug-addicted bums but no shanty towns full of honest, working poor; it's straight up illegal to be "middle poor" in the US.

Massive corporate profits are an artifact of regulatory capture and stifling taxes. Get rid of those things and competition will eliminate massive corporations and their outsized profits.
You don't want manufacturing at home that "creates opportunities for labor", you want manufacturing at home that creates products that are useful. Labor opportunity follows naturally from that, but useful products don't necessarily follow from "creating labor opportunities". You could pay people to dig holes and fill them back in, or make complicated drugs to keep sick retirees alive a few more months, but neither of those things add to the productivity, power, wealth or possessions of your nation. You just end up with what you started with.

That will increase costs due to loss of trade advantage. The point of a protectionist economy is to make sure your enemy can't pull the plug on your factories when you go to war, or arbitrarily fuck with your economy. It's less efficient but more under your own control, for better or worse. Only large and resource-rich countries could even consider it in modern times, and even then they need to be extremely strategic about fostering certain high-tech sectors effectively in their country. They can't just dump money into "chips" and have RTX5080's fall out of it.

Think about it from the perspective of an illiterate peasant who knows not much more than how to grow potatoes on the lord's land under the lord's pay.
