@nprofile…hm0v y'all need to chill with this - i'm sure detailed info will come out about how the LAFD budget may have caused some issues, but their budget is not the reason why we had close to 100mph winds for two days that grounded helicopters and aircraft, or the fact that we've built into sensitive ecosystems for decades priming the pumps for these disasters.
its a dumb narrative to pull out now, and will probably weaken your valid arguments in the long term...assuming everyone gives a fuck about this in 2weeks time which i doubt.

In whats i'm sure not be a shock to anyone, but the #fediverse is basically useless in an emergency. There was *some* slightly useful info. But the fact that search is garbage and no one has a coherent way to use hash tags makes it pretty pointless if you are trying to coordinate on a hyper-local level with normal, non tech obsessed people. its fine for other stuff, but certainly not useful when things are really chaotic and time sensitive.
bluesky is garbage too, but it did have a few useful things out there and the search was at least usable even if it was mostly just idiots spreading misinfo.
shockingly instagram seemed to provide the most useful, actionable info for me over the past several days. that and traditional media like TV.
now that the media has entered the "blame game" phase its looking like print media will be the most reliable source of info moving forward.

Just a reminder that capital doesn’t give a fuck about you. Spent this morning checking my go bag and trying to figure out likely hood of me having to evac Santa Monica, while watching internet tough guys say how easy this could have been avoided (🤦‍♂️) then I get a call from my boss say I need to get my OKRs in for his mgmt meeting today.

i like how i can control the firehose and tone of my feed on mastodon pretty easily compared to traditional social media networks. the net effect for me is i rarely take a break from mastodon - i just remove or silence the things i don't need in my life at that time

@nprofile…t4qe @nprofile…j553 on my laptops I install the powerdxx pkg, set it to high adaptive and it scales as you’d expect on battery and AC. The stock powerd can be treated similarly (I.e. no need to set min freq unless you want to keep the freq artificially high while on battery) - but in my experience powerdxx gives better performance.

I will say that I did get a faraday pouch for my car keys. Its one of those fully remote fobs for unlocking/starting. i put the key in the pouch and lock it in my car when i go hiking/surfing (my car has a combo lock to open the door without the keys).
we had a rash of break-ins by me where guys were scanning/cloning fobs that were stashed in lock boxes and robbing peoples cars while they were surfing so this has worked nicely. it was nice to find a real world use case for a faraday cage :)
but i'm with you on it not being necessary for %95 of mobile phone users.

Amazon Linux 2023 does one better and barely supports auto-update on boot. They want you to always use the latest AMI which changes every week or so with no predictable schedule - it’s such a shit show when distro maintainers have contempt for their users.

The thing is if he just had a small server and Apache his site would have fallen over during the ddos and a) would have realized something was bad and b) probably had a chance to stop the attack. Small is good lord of times.

The #LATimes is closing its historic downtown LA printing plan soon. Its the end of an era, and I was fortunate enough to go on a tour last night. It is the largest printing plant on the west coast of north america, and the scale of the place was awe inspiring.
Trains used to bring in huge rolls of paper from the port of LA, then robots would stack and load them onto spools. Above the spools three or four story tall printers could create something like 20k papers a min or something 🫠
Its an end of an era, and was a pretty bittersweet tour. The only thing that kept going through my head was how basically fbook and goog destroyed an entire industry in america that employed so many people in so many fields (mechanics, engineers, photogs, artists, journo's to name a few roles) - and basically were rewarded for this while bringing so little of value to society in return.

We should create like an "old timers" league in the Senate and Congress. Like after you hit some age (say 70) you are allowed to stay in office, but with diminished authority. say you can't vote, but you get to be an advisor for the reps who came after you or something.
After you realize that most of the geriatric people in our congress spent literally their *lives* trying to get where they are, no wonder they have a hard time stepping down. So why not give them an "off ramp" from power in a way where we can save their precious ego from being hurt.

i used them for some very low-latency, high thread-count systems and it looked like the real deal. we had some issues with offheap data management issue (this was years ago), but the GC stuff looked really appealing for us with the JVM

@npub1yck…ujmw yea that’s certainly one of the main challenges, that and logging imho should be taught with more emphasis.
I’ve been happy moving most of my poorly maintained services to daemon(8). But I’ll agree there really isn’t one approach to rule them all.
One thing I really hate about daemontools are the binary logs. I ran a large scale erlang cluster managed by daemontools and it was always so awkward to see what was going on, which was usually during an emergency. Interestingly that’s my least fav feature of systemd too.

achievement unlocked - deleted a ton of header files and .so's in /lib/ on my #freebsd shell server running current and was able to manually recover things.
the tricky part was booting from a live image and getting the old openssl.so's in place so sshd could start. then i was able to rebuild the world+kernel manually coping over missing critical files along the way.
sure i could have just reimaged the VM, but then i wouldn't have learnt anything. this time i learned that you never run "make delete-old" without carefully thinking about what you are doing.
i also learned i can still be a classic sysadmin and fix stuff when needed, rather than just shrugging and recreating things from scratch.

Don't be an a-hole to the team you are supposed to be supporting. If you are brought in to help lend domain expertise, remember a large part of your value is to offload stress from the team.
Being an entitled "alpha" bro may work with the execs but the people who actually do work will see right through you. Chances are you were brought in despite protests or skepticism of the team to begin with, so you have to earn trust and respect.

Got Eve Online running really well on my primary #FreeBSD workstation.
