I successfully “vibe coded” my first nostr app
it’s a very simple app, but it works end to end doing the following:
1. create a new identity (npub/nsec)
2. accept a custom message from the user of the app
3. connect to a dozen or more relays (and show connection status/logging for debugging)
4. sign the message input into the app and publish it to all relays it successfully connects to
the newly created identity and message I wrote with the app is the original note shown below

yea, I tend to agree — esp with the “unintentionally” characterization. niches often have better overall incentives to find/promote quality.
that being said, I think higher perceived social status/larger audiences can mean people receive new quality information privately that’s not yet widely known so if they are curating/sharing out of personal interest and not for “audience capture” or “growth marketing” reasons there can be quality there

I’d love to review and give feedback on the spec you’re working on. I haven’t used Urbit names. I had not considered 1) readable/memorable but 2) “unmonetized” as a path and I’d like to learn more about the benefits/tradeoffs here.
My assumptions were that most people would expect to be able to pick a name that feels personal/self-expression-oriented. I also assumed the “land-grab” nature of user-selected/personal/attractive/“monetized” would draw people in to own/speculate which can be a powerful marketing tool for a new system.
I haven’t seen an approach that both 1) admits those assumptions while 2) avoiding a centralized issuer/marketplace/“DAO” entity to receive payment/throttle-the-landgrab of issuance. that’s the particular set of tradeoffs I’ve been exploring, but I’m interested in learning about lots of different approaches
I suspect naming is an important area to innovate to make decentralized technologies simpler for more people to understand/use.

I’m talking about an alternative to using blockchains for this purpose. stablecoins always have an issuer (e.g., Tether, Circle, etc.) who can issue and revoke stablecoin dollars anyway… so instead of pretending like we have things like security, immutability, and decentralization let’s admit that it doesn’t have those properties and there might be better (simpler/cheaper!) ways to roughly achieve the same thing. I’m thinking signed messages to confirm transfer instead of a blockchain. I don’t have a specific proposal in mind, just feels like something like this should be possible and could simplify/unify how stablecoins work

i think more diverse experimentation is valuable to finding the best solutions. i’m specifically taking about a way to manage stablecoin transactions without needing to commingle/depend on bitcoin’s own security model (and the costs and risks that come with that)
in short i like the idea of having infrastructure that can keep stablecoins off bitcoin so issuers wouldn’t have too much influence on bitcoin forks, for example, but where payment happens in bitcoin/lightning

the spaces protocol white paper has a section on renewals. Renewals are a big area of concern for me since I think it severely limits self-sovereignty if one has to further engage and potentially pay to continue to use -- how do the rates get set, can they change the rules, who decides? The white paper indicates “renewals ensure active utilization of names.”
I’d bias toward more sovereignty of names even if it comes with the tradeoff that some names fall into disuse.

I think the concept of "there is no global state" is a good one to keep in mind and definitely applies to things such as "likes on YouTube" or more generally "likes on a video".
I would disagree that in the world there can't/shouldn't be a global state. bitcoin is an attempt to create a global state and eventually succeeds as time passes even if not all blocks at the tip are always agreed upon at all times. nostr is not an attempt at global state (quite the opposite!) so things built on nostr will continually fail at attempting global state.
I was imagining a way to anchor the name space on the global state of bitcoin, but where the names could be useful in many contexts including for having unique nostr usernames (kind of a parallel system to nip-05).
my outstanding question is first "would it be valuable to have a common name space if it could be done without centralized issuers, servers and control points?" I suspect it would be valuable since nip-05 is an attempt at such which happens to fall short on the censorship resistant ideal. Seems to indicate there would be demand for such a thing if it could be done.
I understand your position is something like "people should stop trying to create global state where it can't be done" and if we're talking about nostr, I agree it's prob a waste of time. but my question is if it could be done (using bitcoin, for example), would it be valuable to have such a thing?

yea, i overall like the approach of running a naming system parallel to NIP-05 versus a replacement. let people choose what they want.
i worry about the HNS airdrop schemes and an alternative proof of work network. i also don’t know how you run auctions without a centralized order book. does this mean a centralized issuers is required?

I love the fact that we don't have a centralized naming system/issuer for NOSTR -- keeps it free/open/flexible/censorship resistant. We've got NIP-05 which helps with more friendly names, but that ultimately outsources the problem back to DNS and the traditional domain system. This means we still inherit the points of control around ICANN and domain owners.
I think we should have a friendly username system on NOSTR which is not dependent on DNS in any way. To do this well you need to come up with a protocol/agreement for how these get issued. I should be able to show up and say "I'll take 'monkey'", for example, and as long as no one else has claimed it yet I should be able to get it.
The obvious problem is "won't all early users of such a system just name-squat on all the good names". That's usually what would happen, unless we could introduce a cost to acquiring a name. But the cost should not be paid to any centralized provider. So the concept I've been writing about I call "name-bonds". You can use the digital scarcity property of bitcoin to limit how many names someone can issue to themselves based on how much bitcoin they will bond to the name. Tie it to digital scarcity and you can make issuance more fair.
Still trying to get feedback/thinking on the high-level idea. Have you seen anything like this? Do you believe such a system could work?
