D1 can scale to as large as someone could afford. It starts at 5GB included free before it starts costing extra + $0.75 / GB-mo. It also has 25 Billion reads included in the $5/mo Workers paid plan and is only + $0.001 / million rows. You'll want to properly review the Cloudflare pricing documents. For your "25 GB-mo and 7.8 billion reads" example, Nosflare would cost only $15/month (Workers paid plan + D1 storage overages).

I could exclude nostr.land if you like. It's using nip66 for relay discovery so if a relay is shown as online it'll try it, in case someone is subscribed to one of the paid relays

Yes, but the problem is that many can't separate the idea that not all Jews are zionists, so they end up ignorantly hating all Jews. Or, trying to connect things that aren't related. It's an important distinction in the same way that not all Muslims are terrorists and not all Christians are neo-Nazis. You have no idea about who I am or the other freedom tools I have built that do not include Cloudflare. Please do not assume or create whataboutisms.
Do you understand the technical side of why most do not like Cloudflare? It is not at all due to past reasons, but hypotheticals. Cloudflare acts as a man-in-the-middle and decrypts in-transit traffic, but not pre-encrypted payloads outside of the TLS connection, which is how they're able to inspect the traffic and apply various ingress rulesets from their WAF. In some cases, such as a site with a password login, this would make a person's password visible in plaintext to Cloudflare. This is a viable reason to dislike Cloudflare, I agree, and why I would never use Cloudflare on a site that handles PII.
But with the usage of Cloudflare for a Nostr relay, it presents none of the MitM vector. Not even with Nip-44 DMs as they're encrypted client-side with a person's privkey prior to being transmitted through Cloudflare's network. The worst that Cloudflare would have is connection data, but most people concerned about privacy will be using a VPN/Tor anyway.
What I will give you, that you haven't even mentioned yet but is another reason some people dislike Cloudflare, is the possibility for censorship and that Cloudflare is a centralized service. Again, hypotheticals. So, someone better not use another relay software with a VPS from a AWS, Hetzner, [enter in endless list of cloud hosting companies], etc!
Nosflare was built with the intention of building a relay that had a low barrier to entry and could cost-effectively scale both vertically and horizontally and absorb large amounts of connected clients. If that's not what you're wanting, then cool. That's fine with me if this wasn't built for you and that's the beautiful thing about Nostr. You aren't vendor locked and there are many other available relay options out there that allows you to use on a server at your home.

It is using read replication with the D1 database. Each of the worker invocations gets its own sqlite connection to a local replica closest to the end-user, so it is effectively running thousands of independent sqlite instances in parallel. I agree on the write performance, as that could still be a bottleneck to the single D1 instance. But as you're well aware, Nostr relays are usually a read-heavy workload, so this at scale should outperform a local postgres database on a single machine.

Cloudflare has the best and largest global network, which allows the relay to be one of, if not the fastest and most resilient, in the world. It'll outpace any other relay implementation on a VPS or dedi.

Using websocat to send a kind 1 REQ to the #Nosflare relay and then watching new events live streamed through the websocket connection is so pleasing. The new v7 update has been a huge success in placing this serverless relay implementation on par with the most widely used relay offerings. I literally have the legendary @npub1qqq…n47m to thank for inspiration. I used his Nostream for my first relay a few years ago. It inspired me to ponder "how can I do this using Cloudflare workers", and it has been a wild journey ever since.
