Be careful about hardware wallets manufacturers claiming to be "100% air-gapped" but then requiring to connect their wallets to the USB for firmware upgrades.
Lets, be clear. 100% air-gapped hardware wallets can sign transactions, create/restore a wallet and upgrade the firmware without connecting the device to a cellular network, wifi, Bluetooth, USB, or NFC.
Air-gapped transactions is not enough, wallets need to also offer air-gapped firmware upgrades.

I would like to hear the opinion of the Bitcoin community.
While I was researching different assisted wallets for The Bitcoin Hole, I came across a case that I'm not sure how to categorize. Here's the scenario:
An assisted wallet, where the owner and the service provider need both to sign a transaction to move the funds. You can think this a 2-of-2 multisig, where the service provider has one key and the owner the other. However you can also implement this with MPC (Multi-Party Computation). The implementation is not the issue.
I define something as "non-custodial" or "self-custodial" when these two conditions are met:
1- The provider can't move the funds without owner's permission.
2- The owner can access its funds without the provider's permission.
In the previous case, condition 1 is satisfied, but condition 2 is not. So, my conclusion is that this assisted wallet can't be categorized as "non-custodial" or "self-custodial".
Some questions I have in my mind:
- Is my conclusion correct?
- Is there any difference between "non-custodial" or "self-custodial"?
- Since the assisted wallet in this case cannot be considered "custodial" (as the provider cannot move the funds without the owner's permission), how should it be categorized?

These are our impressions about it.
✅ Rounded bounds compared with the previous generation make it feel more comfortable.
✅ Reduced size and dimensions, keeping the same screen 4" screen size.
❌ Missing removable battery. This is something will miss compared with the previous generation.
✅ 2 years warranty compared to the 1 year offered by the previous model.
✅ The support to manage up to 3 unique seed phrases from a single device is awesome. We didn't find this feature in any of the other wallets we compare.
✅ The wallet setup is super easy. With the chance to easily switch between 12 and 24 words, and recreate new keys with just one tap.
✅ Possibility to sign transactions using USB data, Bluetooth or QR, covering the different levels of expertise.
✅ The same with the firmware updates. You can upgrade using the USB port or a MicroSD card.
✅4 ways to configure the device unlock and the access to different features: numeric PIN, alphanumeric password, fingerprint, or gesture.
✅ A dedicated software is used instead of Android, which gives more security to the wallet.
❌ The touch sensor works fine, but it could be a bit better.
❌Missing features like SeedQR support, ephemeral seeds, some advanced security PIN features, etc.
✅ Very good price ($129) for a wallet with camera, touch screen, fingerprint sensor and 3 secure elements

Let's talk about Reproducible Builds for Hardware Wallets firmware.
Verifiable Source wallets let you inspect code for flaws, but pre-compiled software lacks a way to verify if it matches the source. Reproducible builds ensure that anyone can recreate identical copies from source code, build environment, and instructions. That's why is important for all wallet users to learn how to build the firmware and verify it before upgrading their wallets.
If not possible for you, at least see if there are proofs of others doing that verification. One good place to find those proofs is https://bitcoinbinary.org
This week on Twitter & Nostr @npub1az9…m8y8 encouraged people to learn how to verify builds. This was a success, a lot of people could learn how to build and verify the Coldcard firmware.
From http://thebitcoinhole.com we want to also collaborate. So, we added a new section "Reproducible Builds" on our website. There you can find for each wallet if they offer reproducible builds instructions and if there are proofs of verification on http://bitcoinbinary.org
We encourage all the hardware wallet manufacturers (or anyone interested) to collaborate and automate proofs of verifications on http://bitcoinbinary.org.
