The investigations by the PF showed that politicians from Cabo Frio and São Pedro da Aldeia had used illegal means to obtain votes in the 2024 municipal elections. The investigation began during the first round of the election, when the PF arrested electoral officers of a mayoral candidate in Cabo Frio on suspicion of vote buying. With them, they seized electoral propaganda materials, known as 'santinhos', and several R$100 notes. Based on the investigations, police found evidence of other illegal practices, such as scheduling medical consultations at a hospital in Cabo Frio in exchange for votes, with the help of a healthcare professional. In São Pedro da Aldeia, the investigations began after an elector was caught filming the electronic ballot box at the moment of voting. The filming was done at the request of an electoral officer of a mayoral candidate, with the goal of buying a vote and receiving R$100. The search warrants were issued by the Electoral Justice and are being executed at the residences of the investigated individuals and at the City Halls of the two municipalities.
