Nintendo turns its back on franchises when it thinks they are dead in the water. They started doing it with Animal Crossing until the newest one became one of the best selling games on the entire system. Going forward they'll treat it as a flagship franchise. I think they are testing the waters with f zero 99 to see if any interest exists. If it does we'll get a port of GX, if that does well we may finally get a true follow up.
