I listened to a podcast the other day about a gay man who grew up in an oppressive small town in the US who later became a neo-Nazi and convinced himself he was longer gay. Year upon year of abuse and being ostracised did such a number on him that, starved of any community, he broke. Yes, he was a hypocrite, but the cause, in the UK and the US, then as now, is cishet bigotry and the fragile sense of identity of cishets that drives them to be so very cruel to others
