The current events surrounding hockey and Canadian pride is a perfect example of how superficial Canadian nationalism functions.
For years the Canadian flag was depicted as a symbol of colonialism and oppression. Classrooms replaced it in favor of flags from different countries and movements. The flag became further villified during the trucker protest as a symbol of "far-right extremism".
Now it has been rebranded as a symbol of Canadian unity.
The hypocrisy’s glaring: when it’s against Ottawa, it’s toxic; when it’s against Washington, it’s noble.
It reminds me of a Jerry Seinfeld bit where he says people who watch sports are only cheering for a jersey. If a hero player changes teams they become an enemy just by changing their clothes.
A player is analogues to principles. Even though the player (princples) changed teams, their characteristics and qualities remain the same.
However since the emblem or colors have changed, people will now oppose the same principles they once supported.
Propaganda is the determinant on who is the hero, and who is the enemy.
