Drove a friend's diesel Mercedes on waste cooking oil ("yellow grease") a few times. De-rated the engines power output, noticably, but it worked.
The trick he had to prevent the smell was to run it through a little liquid-liquid centrifuge. The few % water in the waste oil reports to the "cake", and most of the smell with it.
