mellanox connectx-3 nics on ebay are pretty decently priced. just be sure that you install it into a pcie slot with enough lanes otherwise you won't get the full 10Gb/s.
imo, 10Gb/s is only useful if you're doing big transfers between servers etc. it's fun yes, but definitely not yet necessary. you'll likely be fine with 2.5Gb/s for a few more years
