I've experienced it firsthand, working inside dotcoms.
Unfortunately, it starts to happen even before going public. It happens when companies start trying to maximize profits, ownership, control, and exclusivity over things like customers, openness & open standards, prior promises, transparency, accountability, etc.
It really is a product of people, first and foremost. People who dislike being accountable to a community, even before going public. I wish I could say this wasn't the case.
