That's especially fun for kids.
Oh, but that would necessitate that you have enough frets to reach the octave high note. (Often these stick dulcimers only reach the 7th note of an octave if your scale starts on the open string, not on the 3rd fret.)

You say it's fretted diatonic, but I'm betting it has the one 'extra non-diatonic' fret that dulcimer players call the 6.5 fret.... which enables one to play in ionian mode from the open string... hence the DAdd tuning.
